THE JACK LOWERY TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP

We are pleased to announce to you that the Awards Committee of the Interior Design Department will be accepting applications for the 1999 Jack Lowery Travel Scholarship. This grant that was made by the late Professor Jack Lowery, FASID, will provide one graduating Interior Design student with a $3000 to spend for travel in a foreign country or countries of their choice. The award of this scholarship will be made at graduation ceremonies this May and the successful candidate will be expected to take this trip during the Summer of 1999.

It is the intent of this scholarship to provide the opportunity to further your educational career through travel and exposure to other countries and their history, culture, art and architecture, and most importantly, interior design. It is also the intent, and a requirement of this scholarship, that the student who is awarded this scholarship document their experience through slides and/or videos and sketches and make a presentation to their colleagues during the Fall of 1999.

Applications are available from the Interior Design Department Secretary in Room D-316 or Prof. Joan Melnick 212-217-8571. All applications are to be returned the that office no later than Friday, April 3, 1999. The application should be accompanied by a formal documented and detailed proposal of your travel plans. This proposal should include the following:

  1. Country/Countries, regions, and or cities to be visited.
  2. Special buildings, types of architecture and interiors, art, details, etc. that you wish to study.
  3. The purpose of your trip and how you expect that it will benefit you, and the Department.
  4. Proposed trip itinerary.
  5. Breakdown of travel and living expenses. (See separate copy of Scholarship Evaluation Criteria.)

The Awards Committee may schedule an interview with scholarship applicants as part of the evaluation process. Notification of the scholarship recipient and the first runner-up will be made after the third week of April, 1999. The presentation will be made at graduation by a designee of the Lowery family.

    EVALUATION CRITERIA

    (Pts Score)

      1. Quality and comprehensiveness of student's (40) written proposal outlining proposed travel itinerary, goals, learning objectives and methods of trip documentation.
      2. Potential growth and development of student (15) as a result of that travel abroad.
      3. Proposed method of documenting travel (15) experience and the architecture and interiors observed and share same with fellow students upon return.
      4. Committee Interview of student(lf required) (15)
      5. Record of academic achievement at FIT taking into account cumulative GPA (15) over the last three semesters, plus credit load .
